Reflections from NRF 2011

As a first year exhibitor at the National Retail Federation (NRF) Expo in New York City earlier this month we were unsure of what to expect. This year was NRF’s 100th anniversary Big Show and it certainly lived up to its name. Hundreds of vendors gathered to showcase the latest in retail trends and technologies.

Nimbo was fortunate to have Microsoft Azure experts working with us in our booth to demonstrate our Cloud Computing solutions for retail. We focused on Point-of-Sale (POS) in the cloud, Business Intelligence 2.0 and Supply Chain Management in the cloud.

As expected a major trend at the show was mobility. We saw mobile POS systems, mobile marketing solutions, mobile payment systems, mobile shopping apps…. you name it. This trend proves that the consumer drives the market and retailers are racing to keep up. It is becoming more apparent than ever that the cloud is a logical tool for adapting to this new retail environment.

We spoke with several CIOs from well-known retailers who were interested in POS in the cloud. A major challenge for them is developing a seamless inventory management process. Using POS in the cloud retailers have access to real-time inventory information which facilitates better decision making. Over 50,000 retailers in Europe are currently running their POS systems in the cloud on the Windows Azure Platform. Read the Case Study.

For the show we developed an interactive shopping game called “Beat the Cloud” using Microsoft Pivot. Beat the Cloud gave NRF attendees a chance to interact with Pivot in a fun environment. Most players were surprised that even they could use the Business Intelligence tool without becoming overwhelmed.

The show gave Nimbo an opportunity to come face to face with some of retail’s major players and better understand where retail is headed in 2011. We were also able to hear what types of cloud solutions will prove most valuable in a rapidly changing climate.

Visit Nimbo at NRF 2011

National Retail Federation 2011
Nimbo will be exhibiting on January 10th and 11th at the National Retail Federation 2011 show. The show is held in New York City at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Please stop by our booth and say hi! The official booth number is #3311.

Free Cloud Assessment
Nimbo is offering a free cloud assessment to qualified retailers at the show.

This year at NRF Nimbo is demonstrating a Business Intelligence solution for interacting with large amounts of data using Microsoft Silverlight. This tool allows retailers to easily identify trends and patterns without tediously sifting through numerous documents, lengthy spreadsheets, and mind-numbing tabular reports.

To encourage trial of this dynamic tool we have created an interactive virtual shopping game. Players use Pivot to find and place designated products in their shopping cart. The player with the fastest time at the conclusion of the show wins a Dell Mini Laptop! Game play is limited to one play per person.

As part of our mission to lead the discussion about the value of cloud computing, Nimbo is offering free cloud assessments to qualified organizations. A typical assessment consists of a two day, on-site evaluation of the retailer’s existing environment, applications, and infrastructure.

The retailer gains a roadmap for migrating to the cloud including a list of suitable applications, costs, challenges and potential benefits. We also work with the retailer to develop a strategy for managing capital and operational expenses over time.

There are many approaches to entering the cloud based on an organization’s current applications, initiatives and future goals. Nimbo performs thorough assessments to find the best approach and long-term strategy for the needs of individual retailers.

Stop by Nimbo’s Booth for a free, interactive demonstration and chance to win a Dell Mini Laptop :Laptop: #3311. Email us at info@nimbo.com for more details.

John Shaw is an Expert on Cloud Computing

John Shaw, CEO, Nimbo, was referenced as the Cloud Computing expert in a blog article written on ITKnowledgeExchange.com. The blog is on the disillusionment theory of Cloud Computing.

John’s expertise in the article, is shown below:

John Shaw of Nimbo predicted we’re in the first wave of cloud adoption, where the majority of people trust their data to email and document cloud options. The second and third phases will include SaaS apps, SAP, BI and data that enterprises want to store outside of the firewall to share with partners. Now that cloud computing is descending the path away from its puffed-up and misunderstood image, perhaps we can move on to the second and third waves.
